New Orleans continues to see significant progress in reducing violent crime, recording 22 murders from May through August 2026 – the lowest total for those four months since at least 2019.
That is down from 41 during the same period last year, a 46% decrease, and well below the 100 murders recorded during those months in 2022.
The yearly trend during this four-month period, broken down by month:

Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said the numbers reflect intentional work happening across the department.
“This is not accidental. We are being intentional about where we put our people and resources, who we focus on and how we use intelligence, technology and partnerships to interrupt violence. Twenty-two is still 22 too many, but the direction matters, and we intend to keep pushing.”
NOPD continues to focus on the people and places driving violence, using data, technology and coordinated enforcement with local, state and federal partners.
Recent efforts such as Operation Golden Eagle are part of that broader strategy, and NOPD will continue building on that work to keep violent crime moving in the right direction.
