NOPD Announces Preliminary Crime Statistics for September 22-28, 2024

The following is a weekly report of citywide crime statistics compiled by the NOPD Analytics Unit for the period of September 22-28, 2024.

Notable arrests made

During the listed week, the NOPD also made the following notable arrest(s):

  • On September 26, members of the U.S. Marshals assisted by Baton Rouge Police arrested Carlos Taylor (black male, DOB: 09-17-2007) in Baton Rouge, La. Taylor had escaped from the custody of the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center in New Orleans on September 23. Taylor was arrested on charges of simple carjacking and simple escape.  He was already facing charges of aggravated assault with a firearm, illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile, illegal use of a weapon and aggravated criminal damage to property.
  • On September 26, members of the U.S. Marshals assisted by Baton Rouge Police arrested Davonn Davis (black male, DOB: 04-08-2005) in Baton Rouge, La. Davis was wanted on one count of second-degree murder in the NOPD’s investigation of a homicide that occurred on September 1, 2024, at the intersection of South Solomon and Baudin streets. Davis faces extradition to Orleans Parish to face the murder charge. Davis is the third suspect arrested in this ongoing investigation.

Gun arrests (arrests made under LA RS 14:95 and sub-items)

Year to date, the NOPD has made 348 arrests for illegal possession of a firearm. This is a 42-percent decrease compared to 605 arrests made during the same period in 2023.

Gun seizures

Additionally, as of September 23, the NOPD in 2024 had seized 1,681 firearms in criminal investigations, a 22-percent decrease compared to 2,158 such seizures made during the same period in 2023.
