NOPD Seizes Over 2,000 Illegal Guns So Far in 2022

The NOPD continues to remove a significant number of illegal guns from circulation and make arrests for illegal weapons.

Removing illegal firearms from the streets.

  • Through October 2022, NOPD officers have removed more than 2,057 illegal guns off of city streets. This total is an increase of more than 26.5 percent from that of 2021.
  • In the past week (10/23 - 10/29), the 8th district made 23 gun arrests. Of the 23 arrests, 18 were made on Bourbon Street. This brings the total number of gun arrests made by 8th District officers in the past 4 weeks to 60, with 51 of those occurring on Bourbon Street.  

Significant Arrests for Interstate Gunfire Incident

  • On October 25, 2022, India Fazande (21) surrendered to NOPD officers in connection with the investigation of an illegal discharge of a firearm incident. The incident occurred on October 16 on U.S. 90 at the Loyola Street exit. Fazande was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on a charge of illegal discharge of a firearm from a moving vehicle.
  • On October 29, 2022, Erica Nettles (20) surrendered to NOPD Second District officers in connection with the investigation of an illegal discharge of a firearm incident. The incident occurred on October 16 on U.S. 90 at the Loyola Street exit. Nettles was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on a charge of illegal discharge of a firearm from a moving vehicle.

Homicide clearances

  • The NOPD’s clearance rate for homicides stands at 40 percent year to date, while the solve rate stands at 43 percent year to date.
  • 77 homicides that occurred in 2022 have been cleared by arrest or exception.

Hiring/Burden Reduction

  • 44 civilians hired, the most notable hires include: Human Resources Director, Crime Lab Director, and PIO staff – Public Affairs Specialist
  • Graduated two recruit classes (194 and 195)
  • Class 196 is currently in its 9th week of training
  • Hired five PSAB auditors
  • Crime Lab director hired
  • Human Resources director hired
  • Deputized 19 current City employees as Quality-of-Life Civilian Special Police Officers from various City departments such as Public Works Construction, Grounds Patrol, Code Enforcement, and Mosquito, Termite, and Rodent Control.

 

Significant Arrests

Second District

  • On October 26, NOPD Second District officers arrested Neil Sordelet (black male, DOB: 08-03-2004) for illegal carrying of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance. The incident occurred on October 26 in the 3000 block of Jena Street
  • On October 24, NOPD Second District officers arrested Carlton Waller (black male, DOB: 02-03-1994) for aggravated battery of a dating partner, battery by strangulation of a dating partner and for battery of a dating partner involving child endangerment. The incident occurred on October 24 in the 2800 block of Napoleon Avenue.

Third District

  • On October 29, NOPD Third District officers arrested Thelonious Walters (black male, DOB: 12-01-1973) on two counts of attempted murder and one count of cruelty to a juvenile. The incident occurred on October 29 in the 4900 block of Touro Street.

Fifth District

  • On October 24, NOPD Fifth District officers arrested Tyrone Young (black male, DOB: 11-07-2001) on one count each of illegal carrying of a weapon and of resisting arrest by flight. The incident occurred on October 24 in the 1900 block of Frenchmen Street.
  • On October 25, NOPD Fifth District officers arrested Matthew Davis (white male, DOB; 02-06-1982) for domestic simple battery. The incident occurred on October 25 in the 1300 block of Saint Anthony Street.
  • On October 28, NOPD Fifth District officers arrested Brandon Bridges (black male, DOB: 06-26-1981) on one count each of illegal possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, for possession of a Schedule II CDS with intent to distribute and for felon in possession of a firearm. The incident occurred on October 28 in the 1800 block of Almonaster Avenue.

Sixth District

  • On October 28, NOPD Sixth District officers arrested Yuan Buggage (black male, ODB: 05-05-2000) on one count of armed robbery with a firearm. The incident occurred on August 5 at the intersection of Clio and South Rocheblave streets.
  • On October 29, NOPD Sixth District officers arrested a teenage juvenile black male on charges of illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile and illegal discharge of a firearm. The incident occurred on October 29 in the 2900 block of Toledano Street. 

Seventh District

  • On October 24, NOPD Seventh District officers arrested Michael L. Willis on one count of aggravated second-degree battery. The incident occurred on May 18 at the intersection of Crowder Boulevard and Chef Menteur Highway.

Eighth District

  • Between October 23-29, NOPD Eighth District officers made 23 gun-related arrests. Of these arrests, 18 were made on Bourbon Street. This brings the total number of gun arrests made by Eighth District Officers in the past four weeks to 60, with 51 of those occurring on Bourbon Street. 
  • On October 29, NOPD Eighth District officers arrested Corey D. Brown (black male, DOB: 08-08-1997) at the Eighth District station on a charge of armed robbery. Brown surrendered to police in connection with an incident that occurred on October 10 in the 1000 block of Common Street.
  • On October 27, NOPD Eighth District officers arrested Robert L. Stewart (black male, DOB:10-20-1993) for aggravated battery by cutting. The incident occurred on September 26 at the intersection of Royal and Bienville streets.
