NOPD Identifies Suspect in Shooting on Canal Street

The NOPD has obtained an arrest warrant for Byron Wilson (Male, DOB: 09-21-1998) in connection with an aggravated battery by shooting incident that occurred on September 23, 2018 in the 600 block of Canal Street.

At about 4:39 p.m., NOPD Eighth District officers responded to a call of shots fired in the area. Upon arrival, officers discovered one female victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the right thigh. A second female victim was found suffering from a wound to her left side, a wound not believed to have been caused by gunfire.

Officers learned that an altercation among a group of unknown individuals began just before the women were injured. During the altercation, one individual allegedly pulled a weapon and fired. The injured victims were not involved in the altercation.

Video taken by a witness at the scene shows a black male subject firing a handgun, before the subject fled the scene on foot eastbound toward Exchange Place. Through investigation, detectives were able to positively identify Wilson as the alleged shooter and have obtained a warrant for his arrest for aggravated battery by shooting.

Also wanted in connection with this incident is Derrion Robinson (Female, DOB: 12-13-1997). Through investigation, detectives have determined that at about 4:37 p.m., Robinson and several other unknown subjects were involved in a verbal and/or physical altercation. During the altercation, Robinson allegedly directed Wilson to shoot, as Wilson was seen producing a handgun and allegedly firing one shot in the direction of a fleeing subject. A warrant has been filed for Robinson's arrest for aggravated battery by shooting.
