NOPD Expands Recruit Testing Options to Include Weekends

NOPD Recruit testing is now available seven days a week.

Last year the NOPD began offering walk-in testing at the New Orleans Civil Service office at 1340 Poydras, Suite 900, no reservation necessary. Potential recruits can take the test at 9:30 a.m. any weekday except on major holidays.

In August 2016, NOPD expanded the testing times to include Tuesday and Wednesday evening testing at 4:45 p.m., and in October the options were expanded to include weekends.

Applicants can now walk in and take the test on Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. and Sunday testing is available by appointment. Interested individuals are still encouraged to apply online at www.JoinNOPD.org and bring proof of education to the testing however, they will be allowed to test without it. All applicants need to bring with them is a driver’s license.

“We want to offer local residents every opportunity to take the test and start the process of becoming a New Orleans police officer,” said Superintendent Michael S. Harrison. “We realize that working men and woman may not necessarily be able to take time off to go through this first step, so we’ve added more opportunities for them to come in and complete the written portion of the application process.”

In September the NOPD received the highest number of new police recruit applications since early 2015. A total of 440 new applications were received in September 2016 compared to 216 in September 2015. It's the highest number of applications received since May 2015, when the NOPD saw a total of 469 applications. The department has received more than 3,300 applications year-to-date in 2016.

The NOPD has a goal of hiring 150 new police recruits in 2016. The NOPD launched Class #176 in May with 39 recruits, the largest class to start training at the NOPD Training Academy since the recruitment campaign kicked off in 2013. Class #177 launched in July with 32 recruits and a third class is scheduled to begin training at the end of October. A total of 20 recruits have already been hired for that class.
