NOPD Announces Increases in Violent Crime Arrests

The New Orleans Police Department remains vigilant in bringing criminals to justice. The NOPD has taken more perpetrators of violent crime off the streets in the past 11 months than during the same time last year. New Orleans, like many cities across the country is experiencing a rise in violent crime.

“As I’ve said many times before, there is no one reason or one bucket that can be considered the cause of the current spike in violent crime,” said NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson.

Significant arrests have been made in all eight police districts. Homicide arrests are up by over 34 percent, carjacking arrests are up by 61 percent and shooting arrests are up by just over 3 percent.

Through diligent hard work and quick response, the NOPD has also taken 1,680 guns off the streets this year. Seven firearms were displayed at today’s news conference (pictured above). The firearms were recovered in July by Sixth District officers who also arrested three suspects, including a juvenile, after receiving a call of suspicious subjects with guns in the 4300 block of Clio Street.

The newly formed Violent Crime Abatement Investigative Team (VCAIT) is also making progress in taking criminals off the streets. On October 25th in the First District, VCAIT, along with our FBI and State Police partners arrested 23-year old Jyron Robinson for Armed Robbery, two counts of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault and Discharging a Firearm During a Crime of Violence. This all happened within a one-week period in October.

“The men and women of the New Orleans Police Department remain committed to the safety of our city, bringing criminals to justice and keeping this community safe each and everyday,” said Ferguson.
