NOPD Arrests Juvenile Suspects in String of Third District Incidents

UPDATE: Through follow-up investigation, NOPD Third District detectives have positively identified the four arrested juvenile suspects in the below press release to the perpetrators in two additional incidents, both occurring on April 30, 2023 – an auto theft in the 2300 block of Wisteria Street and an auto theft in the 5300 block of Paris Avenue.

On May 1, the suspects were additionally charged with two counts each of theft of a motor vehicle.

ORIGINAL: On April 30, 2023, the NOPD arrested four teenaged juvenile males suspected of perpetrating as many as four incidents ranging from attempted simple robbery and attempted armed robbery to armed carjacking, all occurring on April 30 in the Third District.

At about 4:00 p.m. on April 30, as officers were traveling to a reported attempted armed robbery call in the 4900 block of Eastern Street, they located four juvenile black males at the intersection of Selma Street and Peoples Avenue. Upon seeing the officers, the subjects reportedly fled on foot. Officers quickly detained the subjects and learned that two of the subjects – a 13-year-old and an 11-year-old – had each sustained gunshot wounds to one of their legs. EMS was notified and the two injured subjects were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Upon arriving at the Eastern Street scene and speaking to the victim, officers learned that two unknown black males armed with firearms reportedly exited a red SUV and attempted to rob the victim. The victim reported producing a firearm of his own and firing at the suspects, who returned to the SUV and attempted to flee before crashing the vehicle. Four subjects were then seen fleeing the vehicle on foot.

Officers located the crashed vehicle, which matched the description of a vehicle stolen earlier in the day in the 5700 block of Press Drive and of a vehicle used by the perpetrators of two additional incidents – an attempted simple robbery in the 2400 block of Jay Street and in an armed carjacking in the 6400 block of Painters Street. The vehicle was confirmed to be the reported stolen vehicle and the juveniles were positively identified as the perpetrators in these incidents.

The following suspects were arrested in connection with these incidents:

  • The 13-year-old juvenile male was arrested for first degree robbery, attempted armed robbery with a firearm, attempted simple robbery and for illegal possession of stolen things.
  • The 11-year-old juvenile male was arrested for first degree robbery, attempted armed robbery with a firearm, attempted simple robbery and for illegal possession of stolen things.
  • A 16-year-old juvenile male was arrested for first degree robbery, attempted armed robbery with a firearm, attempted simple robbery and for illegal possession of stolen things.
  • A 15-year-old juvenile male was arrested for first degree robbery, attempted armed robbery with a firearm, attempted simple robbery, illegal carrying of a weapon and for illegal possession of stolen things

The victim in the Eastern Street incident has not been charged in this investigation.

The two injured suspects were transported via EMS to a local hospital for treatment and would be booked upon release from medical care. The two remaining suspects were booked into the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center accordingly.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Anyone with additional information on these incidents is urged to contact NOPD Third District detectives at 504-658-6030.
