NOPD Makes Quick Arrest of Suspect in Homicide Investigation

Today (May 8, 2022), the NOPD arrested Dwayne D. Smith (pictured, black male, DOB: 03-06-1990) in the investigation of a homicide that occurred today in the 1000 block of Lamanche Street that left one person dead.

At about 3:26 p.m., NOPD Fifth District officers responded to a call of an aggravated battery by shooting at the location. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male outside of a residence and having sustained a gunshot wound(s). The victim was declared deceased at the scene.

Responding officers detained a subject, later identified as Smith, at the scene for questioning. Through further investigation, detectives determined Smith to be the perpetrator in this incident and obtained an arrest warrant on one count of second-degree murder. Smith was arrested and booked accordingly into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will officially identify the victim and cause of death upon completion of autopsy.
