The NOPD is investigating a traffic fatality that claimed the life of an unidentified adult female. The incident happened on the Interstate 10 East between Michoud Boulevard and Irish Bayou exits, this evening (May 26).
Around 8:49 p.m., Seventh District officers responded to a call involving a traffic accident on Interstate 10 East. Based on preliminary investigation, a 61-year-old man was driving a Silver Nissan Sentra eastbound on Interstate 10 and for unknown reasons, lost control. The vehicle veered to the right into the grassy area, where it collided head on with a steel pole. The passenger of the Nissan was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver was transported via EMS to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Investigation into the incident is ongoing. The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will determine official cause of death and release the victim's name, upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.
