The NOPD is investigating a traffic fatality that occurred this evening (March 4, 2023) at the intersection of Elk Place and Canal Street that left one person dead.
At about 10:18 p.m., NOPD Eighth District officers responded to the location and found an unresponsive adult male lying in the street near a bus stop. The victim was declared deceased on scene.
Through investigation, it was determined that an RTA bus had just unloaded and loaded passengers at the bus stop when the driver began to depart. The driver was then alerted by people outside of the bus to stop. The driver quickly stopped and discovered the victim had been struck by the bus near its rear.
RTA and the bus driver are cooperating with the investigation.
The Orleans Parish Coroner's office will identify the victim in official cause of death upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.
