NOPD Investigating Homicide in First District

NOPD is investigating a homicide that occurred March 28, 2023 in the 800 Block of North Tonti Street that left one person dead in the First District.

At about 6:11p.m.  NOPD officers responded to a call of a shooting at the location. Upon arrival officers found the victim in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, an 31-year old adult black male, was declared deceased on scene.

Investigators are currently in the process of gathering evidence and information to identify the person(s) responsible for this incident, as well as a motive. But initial reports indicate the fatal shooting was the result of an argument.

Because the shooting happened across from Phyllis Wheatley Elementary, the school was briefly locked down as a precaution.  There were no reported injuries and no students were on campus.  No additional details are currently available.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will identify the victim and official cause of death upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.

Anyone with additional information on this incident is urged to contact NOPD Homicide Det. Matt Riffle at 504-658-5300. Those wishing to report information anonymously can do so by calling Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.
