NOPD Investigates Traffic Fatality in Third District

The NOPD is investigating a fatal traffic accident that claimed the life of an adult male near the intersection of I-610 West and Elysian Fields Avenue.

On March 9, 2019, at or around 1:24 a.m., Third District officers responded to a call of a  traffic accident at the location. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male victim suffering from injuries he sustained after he was struck by the driver of a 2006 black Porsche Cayenne.

During the course of the investigation, officers learned that the victim was standing outside of his vehicle, which had broken down in the middle of the interstate. As the victim went to return to the passenger side of the vehicle, he was struck by the oncoming vehicle. The victim was pronounced dead on scene by EMS.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene. Blood and alcohol tests were conducted and the driver of the vehicle was arrested for driving under the influence. The subject was transported to the Orleans Parish Justice Center where he was booked accordingly.

The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will determine the official cause of death and release the victim's name, upon completion of autopsy and notification of family. There are no further details available at this time.

NOPD Traffic Fatality Detective Edgar Edwards is leading the ongoing investigation and can be reached at 504-658-6215.
