NOPD Arrests Coroner’s Office Employee for Theft, Malfeasance in Office

On February 28, 2018, the NOPD’s Pawnshop Unit arrested Thomas A. Evans Jr. (DOB: 09-26-1981) in connection with a theft investigation stemming back to November 2017.

Evans, an investigator with the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office, was found to have pawned a city-issued Nikon camera at the Cash America Pawn store at 3501 Gentilly Boulevard on two separate occasions.

In the first instance, which reportedly occurred on November 6, 2017, Evans allegedly pawned the camera for $100, returning two days later to retrieve the property.

The second instance occurred on November 16, when Evans allegedly pawned the camera, an attachable lens and carry bag for $200. On this occasion, left inside of the camera was a memory card that contained numerous photographs of possible evidentiary value.

Evans was arrested on February 28 and booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center for theft, malfeasance in office and obstruction of justice. Evans was released from his duties immediately after the Coroner’s Office was made aware of his arrest.

Anyone with additional information on this incident is asked to contact the NOPD Pawnshop Unit at 504-658-5546.
