The NOPD today (July 23, 2026), with the assistance of the Violent Offender Warrant Squad, U.S. Marshals and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office, arrested Dennis Stewart (black male, DOB: 01-30-2005) in its investigation of a homicide that occurred on July 8, 2026, in the 4700 block of Laine Avenue.
At about 5:59 a.m. on July 8, NOPD Seventh District officers responded to a report of a shooting in the area. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male gunshot wound victim on scene. The victim was transported via EMS to a local hospital, where he was subsequently declared deceased. The incident was then reclassified as a homicide.
On July 13, the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office identified the victim in this incident as 42-year-old Montrell Robbins and determined preliminary cause of death to be from gunshot-related injuries.
Through investigation into the incident, NOPD Homicide Section detectives developed and positively identified Stewart as the perpetrator. Detectives then obtained an arrest warrant for Stewart on one count of second-degree murder.
Stewart was located today in the Slidell area and arrested by members of VOWS, the U.S. Marshals New Orleans Fugitive Task Force and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office without incident. He is currently in custody in the St. Tammany Parish Jail awaiting extradition to Orleans Parish.
