The NOPD is investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred in the early hours today (July 16, 2026) at the intersection of Lizardi Street and North Claiborne Avenue and claimed the life of a pedestrian.

At about 12:19 a.m., NOPD Fifth District officers responded to a call of a vehicle crash with injury at the intersection of Egania Street and North Claiborne Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive adult female at the location. New Orleans EMS responded to the scene, and the victim was subsequently declared deceased.

Through further investigation, NOPD Traffic Fatality Unit investigators determined that an automobile was traveling eastbound on North Claiborne Avenue at Lizardi Street in the left lane when the pedestrian is believed to have stepped off the curb and into the lane of travel. The pedestrian was struck by the vehicle.  

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation. No charges have been filed as of this writing.
