NOPD. U.S. Marshals Arrest Juvenile Suspect in Shooting, Burglary Incidents in Sixth District

Members of the NOPD’s Violent Offender Warrant Squad and members of the U.S. Marshals Task force today (July 6, 2018) arrested a 14-year-old juvenile male in connection with two shooting incidents and a vehicle burglary that occurred in June of 2018 in the Sixth District.

The suspect was arrested in connection with the following incidents:

  • A simple burglary of a vehicle incident that occurred in the 1400 block of 3rd Street on June 8, 2018. At about 5:18 p.m., Sixth District officers received a call of a vehicle burglary in the area. Upon arrival, the victim told police that she had parked and locked her 2017 Nissan Sentra in the street along the curb in the area at about 6 p.m. on June 2. When she returned to the vehicle at about 5 p.m. on June 8, she found that her vehicle had been entered without her permission. She also found that a handgun she had in the glove box of the vehicle was missing.
  • An aggravated battery by shooting which occurred near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. and South Claiborne avenues on June 9, 2018. At about 10:50 p.m., Sixth District officers were notified of a reported shooting incident at the location. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim with a gunshot wound to the leg. At the same time, additional officers discovered a female victim with a gunshot wound to the wrist. Both victims reported hearing gunfire in the nearby area of Felicity Street and South Claiborne Avenue before suffering their respective gunshot wounds. The victims were each transported to an area hospital via New Orleans EMS for treatment.
  • An aggravated battery by shooting incident that occurred in the 2400 block of Thalia Street on June 15, 2018. At about 10:25 p.m., Sixth District officers responded to a report of a shooting in the area. Upon arrival, officers found a male victim had sustained an apparent gunshot wound to the leg. The victim told police that he was on the front porch of a residence in the area with multiple individuals when they heard gunshots ring out nearby. The witness said he observed a gray four-door car occupied by about three individuals, with the individual in the back seat shooting at the victim before the vehicle fled the scene.

As investigation into each of these incidents progressed, Sixth District detectives were able to positively identify the aforementioned juvenile suspect as the perpetrator in each of these incidents and obtained warrants for his arrest. The two remaining suspects in the Thalia Street shooting incident remain at large and are sought for accessory to aggravated battery by shooting.

The juvenile suspect was located and arrested in the 3500 block of Louisiana Avenue Parkway and will be booked into the Juvenile Justice Center on one count each of simple burglary of a vehicle and illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile for the 3rd Street incident, two counts of aggravated battery by shooting in the Martin Luther King/South Claiborne incident and one count of aggravated battery by shooting in the Thalia Street incident.

Anyone with additional information on these incidents, including the identities of the two at-large subjects in the Thalia Street shooting incident, is asked to contact NOPD Sixth District detectives at 504-658-6060 or call anonymously to Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.
