NOPD Investigates Death of Boy, 8, on Lake Pontchartrain

The NOPD is investigating a death that occurred on Lake Pontchartrain in the Third District.

NOPD officers, New Orleans Fire Department personnel, and Levee Board Police were called at portion on Old Pontchartrain Beach located in the 2000 block of Lakeshore Drive.

When they arrived they discovered an unresponsive 8-year-old boy who had been swimming with his family off a boat anchored off shore.

At some point, the boy removed a life jacket he was wearing and went under water. He was discovered unconscious a short time later. EMS and NOFD personnel performed CPR at the scene and while transporting the victim to University Medical Center.

The boy was pronounced dead at University Medical Center at 4:29 p.m.

The Orleans Parish Coroner will identify the victim after an autopsy is completed.
