NOPD Investigating Traffic Fatality in Third District

The NOPD is investigating a traffic fatality incident that occurred today (January 30, 2026) in the 9200 block of Airline Highway and resulted in the death of a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputy.

At about 11:40 a.m., NOPD was notified of a traffic crash that occurred at the location involving a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputy operating his departmental motorcycle during escort of a funeral procession. Through investigation, it was determined that while stopping traffic and coming to a stop in the roadway as part of the procession, the deputy was struck from behind by another automobile.

The deputy was transported to a local hospital and subsequently pronounced deceased. The driver of the automobile was also transported to the hospital for treatment.

At this time, no charges have been filed. However, the investigation is ongoing. No further information is currently available.

The NOPD offers its condolences and continued support to the JPSO, who is a valued law enforcement partner, as well as to the family of the deputy involved in this incident.

Anyone with additional information that can assist in this investigation is urged to contact NOPD Traffic Fatality Unit investigators at 504-658-6205.
