NOPD Investigating Homicide in Third District

The NOPD is investigating a homicide that occurred today (January 6, 2020) in the 4300 block of Chef Menteur Highway that claimed the life of one victim and injured another.

At about 6:29 p.m., NOPD Third District officers responded to a call of an officer in need of assistance at the Walmart store. Upon arrival, officers located an NOPD officer who was working a secondary employment security detail at the store in custody of a male subject. Further investigation revealed another male subject down in an aisle of the store with a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, at which time NOPD Homicide Unit assumed control of the investigation.

The detained subject was being held for questioning. No additional information is currently available at this time regarding this individual.

A second victim identified in this incident, a female, was transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the foot and was last listed in stable condition. Investigation into this incident is active and ongoing. No further information is available at this time.

The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office will determine official cause of death and release the victim's name, upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.
