ARRESTED: NOPD Apprehends Subject for Two Eighth District Auto Burglaries

NOPD officers have arrested the pictured subject in connection with two auto burglaries that occurred in the Eighth District.

The reporting person told police that on May 4, 2018, she was unloading her vehicle after parking it in the rear parking lot of a business located in the 2100 block of Royal Street, when she walked away from her unlocked vehicle. Upon returning to the vehicle a few moments later, the victim discovered her purse was missing from inside the vehicle. The victim told police that she reviewed surveillance video from the location and observed an unknown black male subject enter the parking lot and remove her purse from inside of the vehicle, before fleeing the scene.

The second incident occurred on December 24, 2018. The reporting person told police that an unknown male subject approached her neighbor’s vehicle that was parked in the 800 block of Ursulines Avenue. The subject reportedly entered the vehicle and began rummaging through the victim’s belongings, before fleeing the scene. Upon further investigation, officers reviewed surveillance video from the area and observed a black male subject wearing a grey sweater and a green military style hat, walking down Ursulines Avenue shortly before the incident occurred.

On Monday, December 31, 2018, at or around 11 a.m., an Eighth District Task Force officer was patrolling the area near North Rampart and Toulouse Street when he observed a suspect matching the description of the subject wanted for the incidents mentioned above.

Mark Matthews (DOB: 01/11/-1966) was positively identified as the perpetrator of both auto burglaries. Matthews was transported to the Orleans Parish Justice Center, where he was booked accordingly.

Anyone with any additional information regarding these incidents should notify Eighth District detectives at 504-658-6080.
