NOPD Partners with Bike Uneasy for ‘Bikes in Blue’ Social Ride

The NOPD partnered with cyclist advocacy group Bike Uneasy in efforts to promote a better understanding of the issues faced by cyclists and forge improved connections between the NOPD and the cycling community.

On Wednesday January 29, 2020 around 4:30 p.m., First District officers participated in a 45 minute bike ride though the First District to get a “cyclist’s eye view” of the city streets during rush hour traffic.

A group of expert cyclist instructors led the group through a variety of problematic locations in the area. Officers were able to make stops along the way to observe motorist and cyclist interactions.

“Now we’re going to be more apt to what bike riders go through while riding on the city streets,” First District Captain Lejon Roberts said.

The ride culminated with a relaxed pace ride down the Lafitte Greenway and ended at the First District police station.

All involved learned a valuable lesson during the social ride. According to cycling coach and advocate Les Leathem, it’s important for people to know that the rules of the road apply to both cyclists and motorists.
