The NOPD is investigating a traffic accident involving a school bus. The accident occurred around 7:00 a.m., on the westbound I-10 Interstate, in the Third District.
The single-vehicle accident involved a school bus carrying students from James M. Singleton Charter School. The bus was traveling westbound on I-10 Interstate, coming down the high-rise near Louisa Street. At this time, and for reasons unknown, the driver lost control of the bus, causing it to strike the guardrail. The bus then turned on its left side, injuring several students.
Nine students were transported to local hospitals by EMS. All students are currently listed in stable condition. Parents of students arrived at the scene to check on the welfare of their children.
The bus driver declined medical treatment at the scene.
The NOPD Third District and the Traffic Unit are investigating the cause of the accident.
The investigation remains open, active and ongoing.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the driver was cited for careless operation, additional citations may be forthcoming depending on the outcome of the investigation.
