NOPD Investigates Traffic Fatality in First District

The NOPD is investigating a fatal traffic accident that claimed the life of one adult male early Monday (Aug.10) morning in the First District.

At around 3:42 a.m., First District officers responded to reports of a traffic accident at the intersection of I-10 West and Orleans Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered one adult male deceased on scene.

During the investigation, officers learned that the driver of a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling westbound on I-10 West in the center lane, approaching the Orleans Avenue exit, when the subject noticed the victim jumping out into the travel lanes with his arms out. The driver of the vehicle attempted to avoid the victim, but was unable to, striking the victim with his vehicle. After contact, the victim was knocked to the ground and subsequently struck by another unknown vehicle traveling westbound on I-10 West. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene.

No signs of impairment were detected in the driver of the Chevrolet Camaro. No citations have been issued at this time; final determination will be made once the investigation is complete.

Traffic Fatality Detective Michael Baldassaro is leading the ongoing investigation and can be reached at 504-658-6215.
