NOPD Arrests Suspect in Armed Robberies, Purse Snatching in Fourth District

The NOPD has arrested Derrick Pickens (DOB: 12/22/1977), who detectives believe is responsible for multiple robbery incidents in the Fourth District.

On August 26, 2018, members of the NOPD Fourth District Power Watch conducted a wanted check in the 1000 block of Teche Street. Pickens was discovered to be at the location and taken into custody without incident.

Pickens is believed by detectives to be responsible for several robberies in the Fourth District, including an armed robbery on a local food truck that occurred on March 14, 2018 at about 8:20 p.m. Pickens then allegedly returned to the same food truck on March 21, 2018, at about 8:08 p.m. and attempted to commit another armed robbery, but was unsuccessful. At that time, the owner of the food truck was reportedly able to arm himself and fire a single shot at Pickens before Pickens fled the scene.

Pickens is also believed to be responsible for a purse snatching incident that occurred in the 400 block of Pelican Avenue on August 30, 2017.

Pickens was arrested and booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center for purse snatching, armed robbery with a firearm and attempted armed robbery with a firearm.

Anyone with additional information on these incidents is asked to contact Fourth District detectives at 504-658-6040 or call anonymously to Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.
