NOPD Makes Arrest on Gun, Drug Possession Charges on Canal Street

NOPD Eighth District officers arrested Shaun Phillips (DOB: 09-12-1998) on August 30, 2017 in the 800 block of Canal Street on gun and drug possession charges.

While proactively patrolling the area at about 11 p.m., Eighth District detectives observed a newer model Nissan Sentra parked in the 800 block of Canal Street with a heavy aroma of burning marijuana emitting from the vehicle. The detectives returned to the parked vehicle, where they observed an individual later identified as Phillips exit the driver side of the vehicle to put money in a parking meter. The detectives approached Phillips and advised him of why he was being stopped. Phillips stated that he had marijuana in his vehicle and gave the detectives permission to search the vehicle. A search revealed two firearms – a sawed-off shotgun with live ammunition, as well as a .22 caliber rifle with live ammunition – and a plastic box containing vegetative material found to be marijuana, along with related paraphernalia.

The detectives confiscated the illegal materials and placed Phillips under arrest for marijuana possession and illegal possession of a weapon while in possession of illegal narcotics

Anyone with additional information on this incident is asked to contact Eighth District detectives at 504-658-6080. Citizens with information that can help solve crimes are asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.
