Detectives Confiscate Assault Rifle During Traffic Stop on South I-10 Service Road

NOPD has arrested Jeryan Edwards (DOB: 7-12-1993) for illegal carrying of a weapon and resisting an officer.

On August 4, 2017, at approximately 2:15 p.m., NOPD detectives Brandon Coleman and Nick Davis conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle traveling in the 8100 block of South I-10 Service Road. Edwards was a passenger in the back seat of the car, and during the traffic stop he exited the vehicle and attempted to flee. The officers managed to apprehend Edwards and attempted to secure him in handcuffs; however he disregarded the officers’ commands and actively resisted their attempts to secure him.

During the struggle a blue steel semi-automatic assault rifle with a pistol grip stock that had been concealed under Edwards' clothing fell to the ground. After securing the suspect in handcuffs the officers retrieved and identified the firearm as a Draco 7.62x39 caliber assault rifle with a 30 shot capacity magazine. Edwards was then transported to Central Lock-up and booked.
