NOPD Identifies Suspect Wanted on Obstruction Charges in Homicide Investigation

The NOPD has obtained an arrest warrant for Mekaill Harris (pictured, black male, DOB; 08-31-1998) amid the ongoing investigation of a homicide on January 26, 2021.

On the date of the incident, the victim arrived at a local hospital via private conveyance and was found to have sustained a gunshot wound. The victim was later pronounced deceased.

During the course of the investigation, NOPD Homicide Unit detectives learned that the victim was with friends prior to the shooting. Through interviews, detectives found inconsistencies within statement provided by these subjects, including Harris. Detectives also determined that Harris intentionally deleted evidence pertaining to the case. Based on this determination, detectives filed and obtained a warrant to arrest Harris on one count of obstruction of justice.

Anyone with additional information on this incident or on Mekaill Harris’ whereabouts is asked to contact NOPD Homicide Unit Det. Walter Edmond at 504-658-5300 or call anonymously to Crimestoppers of Greater New Orleans at 504-822-1111 or toll-free 1-877-903-STOP.
