NOPD Arrests Suspects in Investigation of Multiple Robberies, Burglaries, Thefts

NOPD Arrests Suspects in Investigation of Multiple Robberies, Burglaries, Thefts

The NOPD has arrested six suspects on April 15, 2021 – including five juveniles – believed to be involved in a series of simple robberies, auto burglaries and auto thefts throughout the City of New Orleans.

At about 6:15 p.m., NOPD Third District officers engaged in an authorized vehicle pursuit of a black 2020 BMW X4 which had been reported stolen earlier that day from the 6200 block of South Claiborne Avenue. The pursuit originated at the intersection of Paris Avenue and Gentilly Boulevard. The vehicle matched the description of a suspect vehicle involved in additional vehicles burglaries in the Second District, simple robbery incidents in the First and Third districts and an attempted carjacking in the Seventh District. Additionally, the subjects were seen abandoning a Nissan Maxima reported stolen in an April 14 incident in the 3200 block of Gentilly Boulevard and believed to have been used in a series of criminal incidents in multiple NOPD districts.

The pursuit concluded in the 3800 block of Elysian Fields Avenue, where the BMW was found abandoned. Officers observed multiple subjects running behind businesses in the 3800 block of Frenchmen Street and pursued on foot, making six apprehensions. Additionally, officers recovered illegal narcotics and keys matching to four vehicles, including the aforementioned BMW and Nissan vehicles.

The following incidents have been connected to these arrests:

  • An auto theft with recovery incident in the 6200 block of South Claiborne Avenue on April 15, 2021. The aforementioned BMX X4 was reported stolen in this incident. All six suspects will be charged with possession of stolen vehicles, illegal carrying of weapons while in possession of narcotics, flight from an officer, drug law violation and possession of a Schedule II CDS (methamphetamine). The juvenile suspects will each also be charged with juvenile in possession of a firearm, while James will also be charged with five counts of contributing to the delinquency of juveniles.
  • A simple robbery incident in the 4300 block of Louisa Drive on April 15, 2021. One of the juvenile suspects will be charged with simple robbery, while two of the juvenile suspects will each be charged with principle to simple robbery.
  • An auto theft incident in the 3200 block of Gentilly Boulevard on April 14, 2021, where the aforementioned Nissan Maxima was reported stolen. One of the juvenile suspects will be charged with auto theft, while another will be charged with illegal possession of stolen things and simple burglary and a third will be charged with illegal possession of stolen things.
  • A simple robbery (property snatching) incident in the 3100 block of Gentilly Boulevard on April 15, 2021. One of the juvenile suspects will be charged with simple robbery, while two of the juvenile suspects will be charged with principle to simple robbery.
  • A simple burglary of a vehicle incident in the 2000 block of Gentilly Boulevard on April 15, 2021. One of the juvenile suspects will be charged with simple burglary of a vehicle.
  • A simple burglary of a vehicle incident in the 3800 block of South Carrollton Avenue on April 15, 2021. One of the juvenile suspects will be charged with simple burglary and possession of stolen property.

Investigation continues as to possible connection between the arrested suspects and additional criminal incidents.

In addition to this arrest, James has also been arrested on multiple occasions in recent weeks for incidents including:

  • An illegal carrying of a gun incident at the intersection of North Rocheblave and Allen streets on April 6, 2021. James was charged with illegal carrying of a weapon.
  • An auto theft incident in the 3000 block of Elysian Fields Avenue on March 12, 2021. James was charged with simple possession of marijuana, illegal carrying of weapons, contributing to the delinquency of juveniles, illegal possession of stolen things, illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and two counts of illegal carrying of weapons.
  • A drug law violation in the 1200 block of North Claiborne Avenue on March 12, 2021. James was charged with simple possession of marijuana.
  • An auto theft incident in the 3900 block of 3rd Street on February 12, 2021. James was charged with illegal possession of stolen things.

"I want to commend the work of detectives and officers from several districts for working as a team to arrest these offenders and take them off the street,” NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said. “One of these individuals is facing multiple felony charges, including five illegal gun arrests, related to incidents that have occurred in just the past month. We will continue to arrest these repeat offenders and work with our criminal justice partners to hold them accountable for their actions."
