NOPD Investigating Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Third District

The NOPD is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred today (September 19, 2023) at the intersection of Franklin and Filmore avenues that left one person dead.

At about 5:45 p.m., NOPD Third District officers responded to a call of a vehicle crash with injury at the location. Upon arrival and through investigation, it was determined that the victim, an adult female, was operating a motor scooter northbound on Franklin Avenue at the intersection. At the same time, the perpetrator vehicle was reportedly departing a nearby business and turned from northbound Franklin Avenue onto westbound Fillmore Avenue. The perpetrator vehicle allegedly struck the victim’s vehicle in the intersection and continued its travel westbound on Filmore Avenue. The impact caused the victim to be ejected from the scooter. The victim was declared deceased on scene.

The perpetrator vehicle is described as a full-sized SUV of unknown make, model, color or license plate. The vehicle is further described as having front-end damage from the collision.

Investigators are currently in the process of gathering evidence and information to identify the person(s) responsible for this incident. No additional details are currently available.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will identify the victims and determine official cause of death upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.

Anyone with additional information on this incident or on the perpetrator vehicle is urged to contact NOPD Traffic Fatality Investigator Mike Baldassaro at 504-658-6205.
