The NOPD arrested Dewitt Madison Sr. (black male, DOB: 02-21-1983) just hours after he allegedly committed both an armed carjacking and an armed robbery on September 6, 2023.

At about 7:57 p.m. on September 6, NOPD Third District detectives responded to a reported armed carjacking in the 600 block of North Carrollton Avenue. The victim reported that, at about 7:45 p.m., he was sitting inside of his parked vehicle in the 600 block of North Carrollton Avenue when an unknown black male subject approached while armed with a handgun. The subject allegedly demanded the victim exit the vehicle, to which the victim complied. The suspect then entered the victim’s vehicle and fled the scene.

At about 10:20 p.m. on September 6, NOPD Eighth District officers responded to a reported armed robbery at the intersection of Carondelet and Perdido streets. In this incident, four victims reported an unknown black male armed with a firearm demanded their property. The victims complied and then fled the area on foot. The perpetrator allegedly fired a gunshot toward one of the fleeing victims before fleeing himself in a vehicle matching the description of the earlier reported stolen vehicle. No injuries were reported in this incident.

At about 1:11 a.m. on September 7, NOPD officers proactively patrolling along Chef Menteur Highway observed a vehicle matching the description of the victim’s stolen vehicle.  As the vehicle stopped at a business in the 6700 block of Chef Menteur Highway, officers confirmed the vehicle to be the earlier stolen vehicle and detained the driver and sole occupant. Through further investigation, officers determined the detained subject – later identified as Madison – to be the perpetrator of both incidents.

Madison was placed under arrest and subsequently booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on the following charges:

• In relation to the armed carjacking incident, Madison was booked with one count of armed robbery and one count of use of a firearm in commission of an armed robbery.
• In relation to the armed robbery incidents, Madison was booked with four counts of armed robbery with a gun, one count of attempted second-degree murder, one count of illegal discharge of a firearm, one counts of illegal possession of a concealed firearm, one count of illegal possession of stolen things and one count of illegal possession of a stolen firearm.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
