Covenant House’s 10th Annual Sleep Out is being held on Thursday, November 18th, and NOPD’s very own Lt. Kim Williams of the Field Operations Bureau has joined the cause. She will be giving up her bed for a sleeping bag to help raise money for this very important community organization.
Yearly, Covenant House provides shelter and safety for hundreds of homeless youth who likely have experienced years of physical and/or sexual abuse, domestic and/or street violence, substance abuse, and/or mental health issues causing profound trauma.
Sleep Out to end youth homelessness is an opportunity for this wonderful organization to raise money to continue the many services they provide including food, job training and free medical care, while also supporting and celebrating the courage, resilience, goals and dreams of so many local at-risk young people.
“Kids nowadays have a lot to deal with, and they try and deal with it on their own,” Williams said. “Sometimes they make poor choices, and they turn to alcohol, they turn to drugs, [and] they turn to crime as a means of supporting themselves. And, I would like to say to the adults…, at any point this could have been anybody you know. These kids could have been anybody you know.”
