NOPD Investigating Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Seventh District

The NOPD is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred on May 4, 2019 in the 12100 block of North Interstate 10 Service Road.

At about 5:25 a.m., NOPD Seventh District officers responded to a vehicle accident with injury at the location. Upon investigation, officers learned that a male victim was reportedly walking in the road when he was sideswiped by a vehicle described as possibly being a Nissan Altima. While the victim was apparently not injured by the contact, he reportedly fell in the road and was disoriented.

While the victim was reportedly lying in the roadway, he was then allegedly struck and run over by a second vehicle traveling westbound, described as a dark-colored Chevrolet pickup truck with a Mississippi license plate. The driver of the vehicle – described as an older black male possibly between 60-70 years old – allegedly exited the vehicle and claimed to not be at fault before quickly re-entering the vehicle and fleeing the scene.

The victim was found unresponsive by First Responders at the scene and was transported to an area hospital, where he later died. At that time, the investigation was transferred to the NOPD Traffic Division’s Traffic Fatality Unit.

Anyone with additional information on this incident, two vehicles reportedly involved and or their drivers is asked to contact NOPD Traffic Fatality Investigator Edgar Edwards at 504-658-6208, or to call anonymously to Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.
