NOPD Arrests Suspect in Seventh District Attempted Homicide

On May 27, 2019, the NOPD arrested Herman Smith (DOB: 04-12-1956) in the investigation of an attempted homicide by cutting incident that occurred in the 7100 block of Chef Menteur Highway on May 26, 2019.

Through investigation, NOPD Seventh District detectives learned that the victim was located at the intersection of Chantilly Drive and Chef Menteur Highway asking for help and was transported by a witness to a local hospital. Upon speaking to the victim, detectives learned that the victim was reportedly in a verbal altercation with Smith before leaving the location. Smith reportedly followed the victim and continued the confrontation, allegedly verbally threatening to kill the victim before the confrontation became physical. During the confrontation, Smith allegedly began cut the victim with an unknown weapon, later found to be a razor, and threatened to kill the victim before being separated by witnesses.

As investigation progressed, Smith was positively identified as the perpetrator in this incident and a warrant was obtained for his arrest.

Smith was located on May 27 at the intersection of Vanderkloot Avenue and Morrison Road, where he was apprehended without incident.

Smith was arrested and booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center for attempted second degree murder.
