NOPD Arrests Four in Attempted Homicide of Police Officer, Seeks Remaining Suspect

The NOPD has arrested four individuals – including a 16-year-old juvenile male – on charges stemming from an attempted homicide incident during a police pursuit that occurred on May 6, 2018, while a fifth suspect remains at large.

At about 10:31 p.m., Fifth District officers and Louisiana State Police were near the intersection of France Road and Almonaster Avenue conducting a perimeter during a search for suspects in an earlier armed carjacking incident. At that time, officers observed a black 2008 Honda Accord occupied by multiple individuals speeding through the perimeter and disregarding a stop sign. Believing the vehicle to possibly be connected to the armed carjacking incident, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. However, the driver refused to comply. At this time, a Fifth District officer obtained supervisory permission to pursue the vehicle with lights and sirens activated.

During the pursuit, the driver reportedly drove erratically at high speeds through several city streets and onto Interstate 10 into the Seventh District. The pursuit then reached Hayne Boulevard, where the suspect driver conducted a maneuver which placed the suspect vehicle and the police vehicle next to each other. At that time, one of the suspects in the rear of the vehicle allegedly produced a handgun and pointed it at the marked police unit. The officer was not injured in the incident.

Now joined by additional NOPD officers and Louisiana State Police in the pursuit, the suspect vehicle then reportedly accelerated and crashed into a concrete wall at the intersection of Hayne Boulevard and Downman Road, after which the five male occupants of vehicle fled on foot. The subjects were apprehended nearby at the intersection of Stars and Stripes Boulevard and Downman Road without incident. A search of the scene revealed two handguns, one of which was found to contain a high-capacity magazine. The subjects’ vehicle was also discovered to have been reported stolen.

Apprehended at the scene were Zacchaesus Tassin (DOB: 09-21-2000), Rendell Boykins (DOB: 02-09-1999), Kendrick Guy (DOB: 09-16-1999), a 16-year-old juvenile male (DOB: 12-13-2001) and Arselle Cameron (DOB: 01-08-2001), who is suspected as being the driver of the vehicle.

Upon completion of interviews at the Fifth District station, Tassin was arrested on an outstanding warrant, while Cameron was arrested for numerous traffic infractions and flight from an officer. The juvenile male was arrested for curfew violation. Boykins and Guy were released without charges, pending further investigation. Additionally, detectives learned that while being booked at the Orleans Parish Justice Center, Tassin allegedly provided a false name.

As investigation into the incident progressed, detectives obtained evidence leading them to believe that a gunshot was fired from the suspect vehicle during the pursuit while alongside the NOPD unit and implicating Tassin as the gunman. Based on this information, detectives were able to obtain arrest warrants for the five suspects in regards to attempted homicide of the NOPD officer.

Tassin, who had been booked on the aforementioned warrant, was re-booked on May 9 for attempted first-degree murder and resisting an officer by providing false booking information.

NOPD Violent Offender Warrant Squad officers arrested two of the suspects on May 10. The 16-year-old juvenile male was arrested in the 2700 block of North Tonti Street, while Boykins was arrested in the 2100 block of North Rocheblave Street. Boykins was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on a charge of principle to first-degree murder, while the juvenile male was booked into the Juvenile Justice Center on the same charge.

Cameron was also arrested on May 10 and charged with principle to attempted first-degree murder.

The fifth suspect, Kendrick Guy, remains at large and is wanted for principle to attempted first-degree murder.

Investigation into the initial armed carjacking incident remains ongoing at this time. The aforementioned arrested and wanted individuals have not been implicated in that investigation.

Anyone with additional information on these incidents or information on the whereabouts of wanted subject Kendrick Guy is asked to contact Fifth District detectives at 504-658-6050 or Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.
