NOPD Investigating Fatal Crash at the Intersection of St. Claude Avenue and Alvar Street

The NOPD is investigating a fatal vehicle crash that occurred today (May 14, 2017) at the intersection of St. Claude Avenue and Alvar Street.

At about 6:40 p.m., Fifth District officers responded to a call of a vehicle accident with injury at the location. Upon arrival, investigators discovered that a male operating a motorized dirt bike was traveling eastbound on St. Claude Avenue approaching the intersection of Alvar Street at what was determined to be a high rate of speed. At the same time, a white Dodge car was crossing at the intersection along Alvar Street on a green traffic light. The dirt bike operator disregarded the red traffic light and struck the car in the intersection. The impact caused the dirt bike operator to be ejected to the median. During the investigation, it was found that the dirt bike operator was not wearing any protective gear.

The dirt bike operator was transported via EMS to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. The driver of the car was not injured.

Investigation into the incident is ongoing. No further information is available at this time.

Traffic Fatality Investigator Michael Baldassaro is in charge of the ongoing investigation and can be reached at 658-6215 with any information regarding this incident.
