NOPD Statistics Show Decreases in Violent Crime, Property Crime in Early 2024

The NOPD continues to see a marked decrease in crime throughout the city in early 2024, according to department statistical information.

Statistics current as of March 4, 2024, show that violent crime is down 34 percent year to date compared to the same period in 2023.

The NOPD has investigated 29 murders as of noon on March 4. This is a 34-percent decrease compared to 44 murders reported during the same period in 2023. This includes 11 murders reported in February, which is a 42-percent decrease compared to that of February 2023.

In 2024, the NOPD Homicide Unit currently stands with a clearance rate of 72 percent and a solve rate also of 72 percent. Of the total 21 homicide incidents to date in 2024, 20 have been classified as murders. Ten of these incidents have been cleared by arrest and four cleared by warrant. In addition, five cold case homicides have been cleared by arrest so far in 2024, with two cleared by warrant.

“NOPD Officers are deployed based on intelligence data and analytics, which has yielded positive results,” said NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. “We work closely with our local, state and Federal partners by sharing this intelligence data and working together to solve crimes, targeting violent offenders and getting firearms off the streets.”

So far in 2024, the NOPD has made 158 arrests regarding illegal possession of a firearm.

Regarding non-fatal shootings, the NOPD has investigated 44 incidents year to date in 2024, a 39-percent decrease compared to 72 incidents at this time last year. Of the 2024 incidents, 27 occurred in February. This is an 18-percent decrease compared to incidents in February 2023. To date in March, two non-fatal shootings have been reported.

The NOPD has investigated 52 armed robbery incidents to date in 2024, which is a 56-percent decrease compared to the same time frame in 2023. There were 14 reported armed robberies in New Orleans in February 2024, which is a 71-percent decrease from February 2023. There have been two reported armed robbery incidents to date in March 2023.

Concerning carjackings, the NOPD has investigated 27 carjackings as of today in 2024. This reflects a 50-percent decrease compared to year-to-date figures in 2023. In February, the NOPD investigated 11 carjackings, which is a 52-percent decrease compared to that of February 2023.

The NOPD has also seen a decrease in property crime so far in 2024. Overall property crime is down 26 percent year to date, with auto thefts down 42 percent and vehicle burglaries down 41 percent compared to this time in 2023.

“While it is early in the year, the continued reduction in violent crime statistics reflects the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the New Orleans Police Department,” Kirkpatrick said. “The continued collaboration with our law enforcement partners ensures a comprehensive approach to crime fighting in New Orleans. We thank them and our citizens for working with us to reduce crime in the city and creating a safer New Orleans for our residents and visitors.”
