NOPD Investigates Traffic Fatality on Esplanade Avenue

The NOPD is investigating a traffic fatality that claimed the lives of two bicyclists in the First District.

On March 2, 2019, at or around 8:05 p.m., First District officers responded to a call of an auto accident in the 3200 block of Esplanade Avenue. Upon arrival, officers learned that eight victims were struck by the driver of a vehicle at the location.

Two bicyclists succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead on scene by EMS. Five patients were transported to University Medical Center to receive treatment for their injuries, and one victim refused medical treatment.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, but was quickly apprehended by NOPD officers. Blood and alcohol tests are pending.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will determine an official cause of death and release the victims’ identity upon completion of autopsies and notification of family members.

The investigation into this incident remains active and ongoing. There are no additional details available at this time.

Anyone with any additional information regarding the incident should contact the Traffic Fatality Unit at 504-658-6205.
