NOPD Arrests Suspect in Eighth District Hit-and-Run Crash

The NOPD has arrested Jamel Sharp (black male, DOB: 04-03-1996) of Slidell, La., in the investigation of a hit-and-run crash that occurred on May 28, 2023, at the intersection of Canal Street and Saint Charles Avenue.

At about 1:30 a.m. on May 28, NOPD Eighth District officers responded to a call of an auto theft in the 800 block of Canal Street. Officers met with the reporting person, later identified as Sharp, who stated that his vehicle had been stolen and that the perpetrator fled eastbound on Canal Street. Officers soon after located a vehicle matching the description of Sharp’s vehicle crashed into the window of a business at the intersection of Canal Street and Saint Charles Avenue. The store took damage from the incident.

Through investigation, NOPD Eighth District detectives developed and positively identified Sharp as the driver of the vehicle in this incident. It was also determined that Sharp falsely reported that his vehicle had been stolen. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Sharp for filing a false police report, for hit-and-run driving and for reckless operation of a vehicle.

On June 5, Sharp surrendered to Eighth District officers without incident. He was arrested and booked accordingly into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Anyone with additional information on this incident is urged to contact NOPD Eighth District detectives at 504-658-6080.
