The NOPD is investigating the shooting death of an unidentified adult male. The incident occurred this morning, June 9, 2017, in the 5200 block of Canal Boulevard.

At approximately 7:11 a.m., a NOPD police officer who was working a private security detail in the area was advised by a concerned citizen that an unknown subject appeared to be sleeping in the grassy area on the grounds. The officer went to check on the subject and discovered the unidentified adult male unresponsive. Upon further inspection, the officer observed the subject was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound(s) to the body. EMS rendered aid to the victim, but he was later pronounced dead on the scene.

The investigation is on-going and detectives are investigating to determine a motive and suspect(s) in the incident.  

The Coroner will release the identity of the deceased victim after notification of family members and will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
