NOPD Arrests Suspect in Homicide, Shooting Investigations

On July 18, the NOPD arrested Cody McClairen (black male, DOB: 09-29-2003) in connection with a shooting that occurred on July 8, 2023, at the intersection of First and South Roman streets, as well as with a homicide that occurred on July 11, 2023, in the 3100 block of Second Street.

In the July 8 incident, NOPD Sixth District officers were dispatched at about 4:29 a.m. that morning to the intersection of First and South Roman streets regarding a reported shot person. The victim, a male, was found at the location and having sustained a gunshot wound(s). The victim was transported to a local hospital via EMS.

In the July 11 incident, NOPD Sixth District officers responded to the 3100 block of Second Street for a call of a shot person. The victim was found unresponsive at the location and having sustained a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital via EMS.

During investigation into these incidents, NOPD Sixth District detectives and NOPD Special Operations Division units located a subject on July 18 matching the description of a subject believed to be connected to both incidents. The subject, later identified as McClairen, was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit. Upon apprehension, McClairen was found to be in illegal possession of a handgun.

As the investigation progressed, Sixth District detectives positively identified McClairen as the perpetrator in both incidents and obtained arrest warrants in both incidents. At that time, McClairen was arrested and subsequently booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on the following charges:

  • Regarding the First and South Roman streets incident, McClairen was booked for aggravated second-degree battery, armed robbery, use of a firearm in an armed robbery, carjacking and with attempted first-degree murder.
  • Regarding the Second Street incident, McClairen was booked with second-degree battery, illegal carrying of a weapon and with armed robbery.

On July 22, the victim in the Second Street incident was pronounced deceased at a local hospital. The incident was then reclassified as a homicide. At that time, McClairen was re-booked on a charge of second-degree murder in the investigation.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
