Suspects Arrested for Possession of Stolen Automobiles in Seventh District

The NOPD arrested Kenneth Lewis (DOB: 12-30-1998) and Dashawn Lowery (DOB: 12-09-1998) on Thursday, January 12, 2017 in connection with the theft of several automobiles in the Seventh District, including the personal and unmarked service vehicles of an NOPD officer.

The arrests come as Seventh District officers are working in conjunction with members of the Special Operations Division’s TIGER unit to investigate incidents of several stolen automobiles in the district.

While on patrol at about 3:51 p.m., Seventh District officers observed a white Lincoln MKX SUV occupied by two black males. The vehicle and license plate matched the description of a vehicle reported stolen from the 5600 block of Bentley Drive on December 22, 2016. When the officers' approached the SUV in their marked unit, the SUV began to flee at a high rate of speed. Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens before engaging in a brief pursuit. After losing sight of the vehicle, officers soon located the vehicle parked at the intersection of Warfield Street and Chantilly Drive. Both suspects, later identified as Lewis and Lowery, were subsequently apprehended while on foot in the 7000 block of Warfield Street. A third unknown individual, seen on surveillance video fleeing the vehicle prior to the apprehensions, remains at large.

Further investigation into the detained subjects led officers to the recovery of seven stolen vehicles, which were parked at the Chateau Lane Apartment complex at 6000 Chef Menteur Highway. Among the vehicles recovered in the incident are the personal vehicle and unmarked service vehicle of an NOPD officer, which were both reported stolen from the 7500 block of Wave Drive on January 12. The officer’s service weapon, which was reported to have been in the unmarked police vehicle at the time of the theft, has not been recovered at this time.

Both subjects were arrested and booked into Central Lockup on charges of possession of stolen property, while Lowery was also booked on a charge of resisting an officer.

Investigation into the incident is ongoing and more arrests are possible.
