Suspect Arrested by NOPD in Homicide on D’Hemecourt Street

NOPD Violent Offender Warrant Squad officers today (Jan. 12) arrested Tarik Smith (DOB: 07-15-1991) in connection with the fatal shooting of Joseph Smith that occurred in the 3800 block of D’Hemecourt Street on January 1, 2017.

At approximately 2:22 p.m., First District officers responded to a call of gunshots on D’Hemecourt Street. While en route, the call was updated and officers were informed there was a body in the front yard of a residence in the 3800 block of D’Hemecourt. Upon arrival, they discovered an unresponsive 40-year-old black male suffering from gunshot wounds to the body. The victim, later identified as Joseph Smith, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tarik Smith turned himself in to police today at NOPD Headquarters, 715 Broad Street, accompanied by his attorney. Smith was booked into Central Lockup on a charge of second-degree murder in this incident.
