NOPD VOWS, U.S. Marshals Arrest Suspect in 2022 Homicide

On January 25, 2024, the NOPD’s Violent Offender Warrant Squad (VOWS) and the U.S. Marshals arrested Brian Lewis (black male, DOB: 08-03-1989) in connection with the investigation of a homicide that occurred on April 30, 2022, in the 4000 block of Dauphine Street.

In this incident, Fifth District officers responded to a call of a shooting at the location. Upon arrival, officers discovered two gunshot wound victims – an adult female and an adult male – at the location. The two victims were transported via EMS to a local hospital, where the female victim was declared deceased.

On May 3, 2022, the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office identified the deceased victim as 34-year-old Kelly Bennett and determined cause of death to be from gunshot wound injuries.

Through investigation, NOPD Homicide Section detectives developed and positively identified Lewis as the perpetrator in this incident. Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Lewis on one count of second-degree murder.

NOPD VOWS officers and the U.S. Marshals, with the assistance of NOPD tactical platoons and the Violent Crime Abatement Investigative Team, arrested Lewis on January 25 without incident at a residence in the Sixth District. Lewis was booked accordingly into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Anyone with additional information that can assist in this investigation is urged to contact NOPD Homicide Section detectives at 504-658-5300.
