NOPD Arrests Suspect in Sixth District Shooting Investigation

On January 8, 2024, NOPD Sixth District officers arrested Tyrus Tyron McDowell (black male, DOB: 01-04-1980) in the investigation of a shooting incident that occurred that same day in the 1200 block of Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard.

At about 7:40 a.m. on January 8, NOPD Sixth District officers were dispatched to the location regarding a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a female victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim told police that she was seated in a tent with a known black male subject and, while inside the tent, the male subject became paranoid and obtained a firearm and fired, striking the victim in the leg.  The victim was transported to a local hospital via EMS.

Through further investigation, Sixth District officers located the male subject – later positively identified as McDowell – and determined him to be the perpetrator in this incident. Officers obtained an arrest warrant for McDowell on one count each of aggravated second-degree battery, illegal discharge of a firearm and for illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. McDowell was booked accordingly into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Anyone with additional information that can assist in this investigation is urged to contact NOPD Sixth District detectives at 504-658-6060.
