Suspect Identified in Shooting on Royal Street

Suspect Identified in Shooting on Royal Street

The NOPD has obtained an arrest warrant for Wendell Jerray Butler (DOB: 12-29-1987) in connection with a shooting that occurred in the 100 block of Royal Street on January 6, 2018.

At about 4:17 a.m., Eighth District officers patrolling in the area were flagged down by several bystanders at the intersection of Royal and Iberville streets, informing the officer that a male subject had been shot by someone in a vehicle. Upon arrival to the scene, officers located a black male with a gunshot wound to his right leg. The victim said he was walking in the 100 block of Royal Street when he was reportedly shot by someone in a white Toyota SUV, which then fled down Royal Street toward Canal Street, then in an unknown direction. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

As another Eighth District officer arrived at the scene, he was flagged down at the intersection of Canal and Bourbon streets and discovered a second subject having received a gunshot wound to the forearm in the aforementioned incident. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

As investigation into the incident developed, Eighth District detectives were able to positively identify Butler as the perpetrator.

When located, Butler will be arrested for two counts of aggravated second degree battery, one count of illegal use of weapons, one count of assault by drive-by shooting and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

In addition, Jordan Mitchell (DOB: 11-05-1994) is also wanted for two counts of principal to aggravated battery in connection with this incident.
