Suspect Arrested by NOPD in Armed Robbery, Carjacking on St. Charles Avenue

On Wednesday, December 21, 2016, NOPD arrested Alvin Berfect (DOB: 11/16/1989) in connection with an armed robbery and carjacking that occurred on December 10, 2016 in the 1700 block of St. Charles Avenue.

Detectives with the NOPD Sixth District Investigative Unit, NOPD Special Operations Division SWAT and the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force collaborated on the arrest.

At about 9:19  p.m. on Dec. 10, the victims were entering their vehicle after leaving Houston’s Restaurant, located at 1755 St. Charles Avenue. As the female victim went to close her door, an unknown subject pulled the door open and demanded the victim’s purse, car and car keys while brandishing what the victims described as a long gun. The victims complied, and the subject entered the vehicle and fled the scene, driving from Felicity Street to St. Charles Avenue.

Through investigation, detectives were able to positively develop Berfect as the perpetrator in the incident.

Berfect was apprehended by NOPD SWAT officers and detectives without incident. He was subsequently booked into Central Lockup on two charges of armed robbery with a firearm, one count of carjacking and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

Berfect is also being investigated in connection with additional incidents in the area, including as a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run crash on November 7, 2016 at the intersection of North Claiborne Avenue and St. Philip Street.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to contact Sixth District detectives at 504-658-6060. Citizens with information that can help solve crimes are asked to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP.
