NOPD Investigates Death of Pedestrian on Basin Street

The NOPD is investigating the death of a pedestrian last night (Dec. 7).

At approximately 10:35 p.m., NOPD received a call that a pedestrian had been hit by a car on Basin Street at St. Peter. Upon arrival they found an injured 50-year-old black male. The victim later died while en route to the hospital.

A witness who was driving lakebound in the right lane of Basin told police that the victim, who was wearing all black clothing, was crossing Basin Street at St. Peter. The witness said he saw the man crossing the street at the last minute and was able to avoid the pedestrian, however the 2007 Toyota Avalon traveling in the left lane was not able to avoid hitting him.

The driver of the Toyota remained on the scene and was taken to the DWI Testing Facility for a toxicology test. He passed and was released without being cited. The investigation is ongoing but no charges are expected at this time.

The Coroner’s Office will conduct an official autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
