NOPD Investigating Homicide in First District

The NOPD is investigating a homicide that occurred today (August 14, 2022) at the intersection of Canal and North Derbigny streets that left one person dead, another injured and a dog injured.

At about 4:51 p.m., NOPD First District officers responded to a call of a shooting at the location. Upon arrival, officers located a female seated in the driver's seat of a crashed vehicle at the intersection of Canal and North Claiborne Avenue. A male subject was also located lying on the adjacent street corner. Both subjects were found to have sustained gunshot wounds. The female victim was declared deceased on scene, while the male victim was transported via EMS to a local hospital. No immediate update on the male's condition was available as of this writing.

A dog was also located on scene and was found to have sustained a gunshot wound. The dog was transported to LASPCA for treatment. No immediate update on the dog's condition was available as of this writing.

Investigators are currently in the process of gathering evidence and information to identify the person(s) responsible for this incident, as well as a motive. No additional details are currently available.

The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will identify the decedent and official cause of death upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.
