NOPD, U.S. Marshals Arrest Suspect Wanted in Investigation of 2021 Homicide

Today (August 25, 2022), a collaborative effort between the NOPD’s Homicide Unit and Violent Offender Warrant Squad and the U.S. Marshals resulted in the arrest of wanted suspect Jessie Hughes (black male, DOB: 10-23-1989). Hughes was wanted by the NOPD in the investigation of a homicide that occurred on September 20, 2021, in the 4300 block of Tchoupitoulas Street.

At about 1:57 p.m. on September 20, NOPD Sixth District officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 4300 block of Tchoupitoulas Street. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive adult male down at the scene and having sustained a gunshot wound. The victim was declared deceased at the scene and the incident was reclassified as a homicide.

Through investigation, NOPD Homicide Unit detectives developed and positively identified Hughes as the perpetrator in this incident. On September 22, 2021, an arrest warrant was obtained for Hughes on one count of second-degree murder.

As the investigation progressed, Hughes was determined to have relocated to Austell, Ga., where was arrested and taken into custody this morning by the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force. Upon extradition to Orleans Parish, Hughes will be booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on the murder charge.

Hughes is the fifth suspect arrested in connection with this incident. Four additional suspects were arrested in prior months, each on one count of principle to second-degree murder.

The NOPD wishes to thank the thank the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshals New Orleans Task Force for their continued assistance. We also would like to thank those in the community for tips and assistance provided in this investigation.

Anyone with additional information on this incident is asked to contact NOPD Homicide Unit detectives Ryan Aucoin or Maurice Stewart at 504-658-5300.
