NOPD VOWS Unit Arrests Suspect in Aggravated Assault Incident

The NOPD Violent Offender Warrant Squad, along with the U.S. Marshals Service have arrested Cleveland Smith (DOB: 11/05/1997) in connection with an aggravated assault incident that occurred at or around 11:19 p.m. on August 11, 2018.

The victim told police that she and her acquaintance were approaching the intersection near Behrman Avenue and Newton Street when Smith raised a handgun from his waistband and began firing shots at the victims’ vehicle, one of which struck the rear window, causing the window to shatter. The victims then drove away from the scene to escape the suspect.

During the course of the investigation, officers located Smith on August 17, 2018, in the 1000 block of Teche Street. Smith was transported to The Orleans Parish Justice Center, where he was booked with two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm and simple criminal damage to property.
